DIY Discoveries…

As you may know, we (aka Calder) are working on exposing the brick wall in our house. It’s looking great so far! After taking a break from it this past week to finish moving and get a start on unpacking, we’re back at it! But check out what was uncovered today:

Apparently at one point there was a doorway here to the other unit…or something like that. Quite a nice surprise (sarcasm)!

BUT we are making the best of it and have started brainstorming what to do with it. Some ideas we have are to frame it out with trim and make it look like a window but use a mirror, do the same thing but frame it with brick, frame it out and put new drywall in and paint it with chalkboard paint, or frame it out and put some sort of interesting art there.

I’m leaning towards the chalkboard paint or a mirror. What ideas do you all have? All suggestions are welcome and appreciated!!

Anyway, this discovery led to a new decision about the brick. Instead of doing the entire wall, we’re 90% sure we’re just gonna expose it until the bump out in our hallway:

See what I’m talkin about? ps- you may or may not have noticed the non-brick hallway wall got painted this weekend! Same gray as the living room 🙂

If we make it a clean edge at that point it will be a good stopping point and still provide a huge impact. Seriously, it feels like a totally different living room!

So here’s where we stand right now:

The goal is to make it to the bump out point by the end of this weekend or latest next weekend. Then we just gotta clean it, re-mortar some spots, and seal it. And get all the dust cleaned out!

It’s definitely been a fun adventure so far, this home ownership thing. Can’t wait to keep sharing our happenings 🙂

Don’t forget to comment if you have any ideas for the doorway thing. And be sure to “like” my Facebook page and follow on Twitter and Pinterest via the new (ish) buttons on my sidebar!

  1. I love your new home Jenna! and I love reading your blog. Me and sam literally watch HGTV every night and you guys remind me of the property brothers haha but anyway Im obsessed with the brick wall and cant wait to see how everything turns out! i like the chalkboard idea 🙂

  2. Thanks Mollie, I always love comments and hearing readers thoughts! Maybe someday you and Sam can roadtrip out and see it in person! The more I think about it, I like the chalkboard idea too 🙂

  3. Hey Jenna, I like the chalk board idea. I think that would be simple and easy. However you could also replace the door with a old fun antiqued door found at a vintage shop. Also, DONT STOP! I would love to see the whole wall as brick. Good luck lady. Looks great so far.

  4. Thanks Rachel! We’ve been getting some good ideas and I’m excited to decide which to implement. I like the door idea! Only one problem–we have about an inch of depth to work with and it doesnt go all the way down to the floor..there is still a foot of trim underneath lol. And man, I’ll keep you posted on if we do the whole wall. Such a big job!
